Vermont’s attorney general, William Sorrell, announced that Vermont has now asked an appeals court to rule the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which defines marriage as the union of a man and a woman, unconstitutional.

He said that the law unfairly discriminates against same-sex couples, and prevents them from receiving federal benefits.

Vermont, New York and Connecticut will proceed with the lawsuit together.
