Sources said Wednesday the NFL and referees union have reached an agreement to end the lockout, meaning officials may return to the field this weekend, ESPN reported.

The rumor has not yet been confirmed, as NFL officials have said they would not compromise on issues like pension plans and a "taxi squad" of 21 new officials. The sticking point, according to insiders, appears to be "about a little more money."

The lockout has meant replacement refs have been running the show this season. Fans have complained throughout, but the final straw appears to have been a disastrous call Monday night in a matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers.

League sources said it might take a week to get locked-out officials up and running, but the NFL Referees Association said its 121 referees have been trained in the new rules and either have already or are prepared to pass the required physicals immediately.
