Republicans And Democrats Battle For South Bay’s Assembly District

Democrat Al Muratsuchi, Deputy Attorney General and member of the Torrance Unified School District, narrowly beat Republican contender, Craig Huey, 48 percent to 38 percent in June’s primary for State Assembly.
Redistricting lines have removed the liberal city of Venice, and replaced it with the much more conservative neighborhood of Rancho Palos Verdes.
According to the California Majority Report, Democrats still maintain a Democratic registration advantage in the 66th District. Yet, registration is split pretty evenly, with Democrat registration at 38 percent, and Republican registration at 35 percent.
Democrats are hoping Muratsuchi will have greater appeal to the newly drawn district, which has one of the largest Asian populations in the state, with one in five voters being Asian.
Muratsuchi also has a financial advantage over his opponent. Despite Huey raising more money during the latest finance reporting period from May 20 to June 30. Huey raised $226,268.58, while Muratsuchi raised $116,595 in the same period.
Still, Muratsuchi has managed to raise $411,327.55 since Jan. 1, while Huey has raised $367,414.27.

California has the lowest S&P rating in the nation: A-, one step above BBB which was where we were during the recall. People are leaving the state in droves. Businesses are leaving and taking their tax base with them. City governments are teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. We need people in the assembly like Craig Huey who will vote for laws that attract jobs back to the state.
it is scary that a extremist like huey can come this close to winning. i promise that if everyone knew who huey was, he would loose by a landslide margin. he is a danger to our state and america. he places the bible before our laws and the constitution. i have been to meeting where he spoke and it scared me and many others.
In the June primary Muratsuchi beat Huey in all 3 Beach cities in addition to Gardena.
There are several errors in this article. There were three candidates in the primary, two Republicans and a Democrat. The Republican candidates picked up 59.51% of the vote. Muratsuchi was the lone Democrat and yet only managed to pick up 40.49% of the vote. Except for the City of Gardena, Albert Muratsuchi (D) lost to Craig Huey (R) in every city in the district, even in Torrance where Muratsuchi is a school board member. One in five voters are not Asian. One in five residents are Asian but most of them either aren't old enough to vote or are not even registered to vote. There are 259,556 voters registered in AD 66 – 10,236 are Japanese. This is how the Japanese voted in the Primary: DEM 1539, REP 1115, Independent (DS) 492. Finally, the voter registration numbers are misleading. The Registrar of voters has not purged its voter roles in years. There are approximately 25,000 registered Democrats and Independents in the district who have not voted in a presidential election since the year 2,000. They have moved, died or simply stopped voting.
The Democrats have targeted AD66 and three other Assembly Districts because they need to pick up a few seats to win a 2/3 majority thereby allowing them to raise taxes without voter approval.
