Maison Martin Margiela showed the spring 2013 collection in a Paris mansion with the interior covered entirely in white plastic, leaving only the chandeliers. The venue reflected the collection - spare, monochrome minimalism in luxurious leather, elegant draping and sparse boxy tailoring.

In contrast to the growing movement of feminine, decadent clothing, Maison Martin Margiela sent many nearly-shapeless, tentlike blouses, dresses and skirts down the runway.

The models' neutral faces and flyaway hair pulled into a low bun echoed the neutral gray, black, white and taupe that populated the collection. The only accessories were small clutches in the same color as the clothes, and neutral pumps and open-toed sandals completed the look.

The opening look, an impeccably fitted strapless gray leather cocktail dress, was very next generation ladies who lunch. A pairing of black tailored trousers and a midriff-bared one-shoulder tied top stood out as daring and directional. The collection managed to be feminine without jewels or bright colors, and sexy without being obvious.

As usual, Margiela passed by trends in favor of simple yet barrier-pushing shapes. The monochrome neutrals put the focus on silhouette and cut, subverting the over-the-top extravagance of glamor and luxury to create complex, cerebral clothes that look deceptively simple.
