Katie Couric Reveals Personal Battle With Bulimia
Couric, who is known for reporting on public figures who struggle with their problems, announced on her show, that she had suffered from bulimia. Prior to her announcement, she interviewed singer and "X Factor" judge Demi Lovato on her struggle with her eating disorder in 2010.
According to Page Six, Couric says on her show, “I wrestled with bulimia all through college and for two years after that. And I know this rigidity, this feeling that if you eat one thing that’s wrong, you’re full of self-loathing and then you punish yourself, whether it’s one cookie or a stick of gum that isn’t sugarless, that I would sometimes beat myself up for that. How do you have a healthy relationship with food, and say, 'You know what, I can have one cookie and it’s OK?' That is such a huge thing for people who wrestle with this.”
To the public this may come as a shock, however, by speaking out about her battle with bulimia, Couric can help others who may deal with their eating disorder in private. According to Page Six, “it is estimated that 8 million people are suffering from an eating disorder.”
Lovato and Couric have received medical and psychiatric attention to rid themselves of the disorder. Today, Katie and Demi maintain a healthy lifestyle.
