Assemblywoman Cathleen Galgiani (D-Stockton) and Assemblyman Bill Berryhill (R-Ripon) are looking to grab an open seat in the 5th State Senate District, which is seen as a swing area that could shift the balance of power in Sacramento.

According to The Los Angeles Times, voter registration is 42 percent Democratic and 39 percent Republican.

Democrats are hoping to win a two-thirds supermajority in the state Senate this year. They have been keeping a close eye on the redrawn district, which combines pieces of four old districts, three of them represented by Republicans in recent years.

The district, currently represented by Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis), encompasses San Joaquin County; Dixon, Fairfield, Suisun City and Vacaville in Solano County; Davis, West Sacramento, Winters and Woodland in Yolo County; Walnut Grove and a portion of Sacramento County.

Galgiani is finishing her third term in the 17th Assembly District. She lived in Livingston, but moved to a house she owned in Stockton earlier this year.

Berryhill is completing his second term as the 26th District assemblyman. He has spent most of his life in Stanislaus County, but also recently moved to a house in Stockton.

The Lodi News-Sentinel reported that the campaign race will be unique because both candidates are veteran politicians and current lawmakers.

Galgiani's main focus will be on the economy said Tom Lawson, her campaign manager. Lawson also said the Central Valley has been hit hard in terms of unemployment.

Galgiani is looking to create more jobs and supports plans for a high-speed rail, which will bring construction jobs to the Central Valley.

Berryhill is also looking at the state of California's economy. Rather than pass new taxes, he plans to reduce spending.

"Bill is a fiscal conservative. No one can say that Cathleen is. If people care about jobs and the fiscal responsibility of government, we give them a pretty clear alternative," said Duane Dichiara, Berryhill's consultant.

Berryhill, who has run a wine grape growing and harvesting operation for 30 years, is also looking to stop the early release of prisoners.

However, Galgiani was well received by voters during the June 2012 primaries, receiving 41 percent of the votes compared to Berryhill's 37 percent. Her advisor said they would focus on reaching out to more voters, especially in Stanislaus.
