Since last year's Emmy Awards, a brand new millennial HBO show came catapulting onto our radars. That show, of course, is "Girls."

Written and directed by "Tiny Furniture" creator, Lena Dunham, "Girls" follows the lives of four badass young females living in Brooklyn, NY. (To read past Neon Tommy articles on "Girls", click here.) It's a quirky, campy, often hilarious show that depicts the less-glamorous sides of living in modern day New York City (something I related wholeheartedly to).

For her creative genius, Lena is nominated for not one, not two, but three shiny Emmys in the categories of: Comedy Actress, Directing for a Comedy Series, and Writing for a Comedy Series. At 26, she is the youngest person to be nominated in any of her categories.

Below is the breakdown of the nominees (and her competition) in each category:

COMEDY ACTRESS

Lena Dunham as Hannah Horvath in "Girls"

Melissa McCarthy as Molly Flynn in "Mike & Molly"

Zooey Deschanel as Jess Day in "New Girl"

Edie Falco as Jackie Peyton in "Nurse Jackie"

Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope in "Parks and Recreation"

Tina Fey as Liz Lemon in "30 Rock"

Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Selina Meyer in "Veep"

DIRECTING FOR A COMEDY SERIES

Robert B. Weide, "Curb Your Enthusiasm "

Lena Dunham, "Girls"

Louis C.K., "Duckling"

Jason Winer, "Modern Family"

Steven Levitan, "Modern Family"

Jake Kasdan, "New Girl"

WRITING FOR A COMEDY SERIES

Chris McKenna, "Community"

Lena Dunham, "Girls"

Louis C.K., "Louie"

Amy Poehler, "Parks and Recreation"

Michael Schur, "Parks and Recreation"

Pretty serious group, right? Yes, Lena finds herself in legendary comedic company. According to the LA Times, Julia Louis-Dreyfus has officially tied Lucille Ball as the most Emmy-nominated comedic actress in history (this is her 13th Emmy nomination). Along with Tina Fey… Edie Falco… Lena's up against some seriously legendary competition. And that's just within the category of comedic actress.

But as the nominations suggest, Lena deserves the honors. What "Girls" brought to television is so on-point, honest, and fresh, I'm rooting for her whole-heartedly. Given the uniqueness of "Girls", I would not be surprised in the least if she sweeps.

Go Lena, go!!

The 2012 Emmys will be presented at the Nokia Theatre in downtown LA on Sunday Sept. 23. The show will be broadcast live coast-to-coast on ABC beginning at 5pm PST, 8pm EST. (To catch the red carpets, turn in earlier!)
