Ben Sheehan stars as Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney in "Full of Mitt"

Fans of HuffPost Comedy are likely familiar with the array of original comedy videos and blogs the site features. This week, HuffPost Comedy picked up on a musical video spoof of Mitt Romney entitled, "Full of Mitt", a rap video created by and starring comedy songwriter, Ben Sheehan. If you haven't seen the video, check it out below. The more times I view it, the more moments of brilliance I pick up on. 

I had a chance to catch up with LA-based Ben and find out a bit about the genius behind this hysterical parody. (For anyone who's curious, he wrote the song long before this week's focus on the 47%).

Q: Your YouTube videos are awesome. How did you get into making them?

A: I did my first one about 4 years ago, a little after I'd released an album of serious, sensitive, white-boy, singer-songwriter songs. It was a one-off YouTube video about Sarah Palin; and my friends and family and everyone thought it was a lot better than my serious project. I figured, 'maybe there is something here, focusing on topical subjects'. I didn't do another one for about two years. Then my friend and I were in New York right when Conan's Show got kicked off the air. We did a parody in Central Park of Puff Daddy's "I'll be Missing You" for Conan called, "I'll Be Watching You". We put it up online, sent it out to tons of friends, and it ended up on a bunch of blogs and we started getting emails from agents and managers. For the next two years I intermittently made a video whenever I could about a topical subject. There's no shortage of subjects when you're looking at the news. There are always interesting things in politics to write songs about.

Q: That leads me to my next question. What inspired you to make the video about Romney?

A: I wanted to do something about Romney for the election. Actually it was my dad who came up with the title and the obvious pun, and I was trying to figure out what I could do a song about. It occurred to me that one of people's main criticisms of Romney is that he's very ostentacious and that he's all about money. So I thought, what if he took on the mentality of a rapper, but instead of rapping about being up in the club he's rapping about off-shore bank accounts and his dressage horse? Basically, taking the template of a rap video and applying it to a very wealthy republican candidate.

Q: Is this your first time being featured on HuffPost Comedy?

A: It is not, it's actually my third. In 2010, I did a song about Christine O'Donnell and I had an article written in the Huffington Post, and then last year I did a video on Palestine for a non-profit called One Voice. They work with Israel and Palestine to find a two-state solution. They reached out to me having seen some of my videos online and asked if I would do a comical song about a situation that is obviously rife for comedy. So that one was on Huffington Post... and now this one about a year and a half later.

Q: What are you working on now? Any plans for a sequel?

A: No plans for a sequel just yet. I have a couple of ideas. I think I definitely want to tackle a subject next rather than an individual person. Songs about an issue have a little more of a shelf-life.

Q: Anything else you want to let Neon Tommy readers know?

A: Go out and vote. Make your voice heard wherever you are, especially if you're in a swing state. While it's fun to mock politics and stuff, if you stand by the sidelines and let those who do participate, especially if they have extreme opinions, take over the electorate, crazy things happen. So get out and vote and make your voice heard!
