Roar Shack Reading Series Presents: Past Is Prologue | Sept. 9 | 5-7 p.m. | Stories Bookstore in Echo Park

Roar Shack, a collective filled with artists and writers, unites to present an evening full of poetry, writing, music and live writing. What is live writing you may ask? A little something that Roar Shack devised wherein the audience votes on a writing prompt upon arrival, then the winning prompt is presented to two authors reading and two members of the audience who will write to that prompt onstage for all to see. The audience then votes on their favorite story written that will be developed for the next reading series! Poet David Hernandez, writer and Editor-in-Chief of Author magazine Bill Kenower, July Live Write winner Ameni Rosza and musician Robert Morgan Fisher will be the main entertainment for this evening of words, wit and more. FLASH Festival 2012 at the La Brea Tar Pits | Sept. 8-23 | Saturdays and Sundays at 8 p.m. | At the Page Museum

Fifteen teams of writers, directors and actors from the Chalk Reparatory Theatre are bringing the La Brea Tar Pits to life this month. Five new 10-minute plays will be presented each Saturday and Sunday until Sept. 23, performed in and around the exhibits at the Page Museum. Chalk Rep is dedicated to presenting theatre in unconventional spaces, and the tar pits certainly fit the bill. But reserve your seats soon – opening night is already sold out. Tickets (which go for a $15 suggested donation) will also be available each night at the door. (Chalk Rep)

My Morning Jacket | Sept. 11-13 | 7p.m. | The Wiltern

The psychedelic-leaning roots rock group My Morning Jacket is bringing their signature sound (which was once the inspiration for an "American Dad" episode?!) to LA as part of the promotional tour for their most recent album, "Circuital." The show's a part of KCRW's "KCRW Presents" series, which is also bringing Hot Chip, Passion Pit, and Animal Collective to the Hollywood Bowl. The band will be joined by Portugal The Man during their 3-day stay at the Wiltern; whether you're a casual listener or a die hard fan, make sure to catch My Morning Jacket live at one of the city's most historic venues. New Cocktail Menu At The Churchill Crafted by Mia Sarazen | Ongoing in September | Happy Hour 3-7 p.m. daily; 10 p.m. Sun/Mon | The Churchill in West Hollywood

Mia Sarazen, an award-winning bartender who's designed stellar beverage programs for SoHo House, Harvard & Stone, Black Market Liquor Bar, and the Tasting Kitchen, takes on the Churchill as her next mixology project. Sarazen shakes things up on the drink menu with "approachability and fresh ingredients" as her muse. Try “The Bulldog," which features Milagro blanco, passion, pineapple, lime and jalepeño. With a daily happy hour from 3-7p.m., the appropriately-named Churchill in West Hollywood is the perfect place to sip on a creative cocktail from the revamped menu.
The Churchill opened last October and serves seasonal American cuisine. Happy hour is held daily from 3-7 pm, as well as a late night happy hour starting at 10 pm on Sunday and Monday. Weekly DJ's on Thursday. Vintage photo booth on Sunday (The Churchill).
