Staff Reporters |
September 28, 2012 | 5:04 p.m. PDT

City Shortlist is a weekly roundup of the city's best events handpicked by NT staffers.

Front Porch Cinema at the Pier | Sept. 28-Oct. 19 | Santa Monica Pier

The Santa Monica Pier is launching its “Front Porch Cinema” event every Friday this fall, offering free movies, food and music on the Pier. It kicks off Friday with everyone’s favorite classic, The Wizard of Oz – there better be a sing along! - followed by The Hunger Games (Oct. 5), Exit Through the Gift Shop (Oct. 12), and 500 Days of Summer (Oct. 19) in the Fridays to come. Music starts at 6 p.m., and the film will get going at 7:30 p.m. Get more info here.

ARTmageddon | SEPT. 29-30| Various Locations

Instead of worrying about how to get across town when the second Carmeggedon hits L.A. this weekend, leave your cars at home and take this opportunity to enjoy a mini-staycation. In conjunction with various art organizations and community leaders, ARTmageddon, an initiative encouraging people to explore the various galleries, theatres and art venues in their own neighborhoods, will be your one-stop resource for events all over this city. Trust us, by the looks of the interactive map feature on their website, there is bound to be an event to satiate the inner artist in anyone (ARTmageddon).

Art Platform Los Angeles | Sept. 28-30 | Barkar Hangar in Santa Monica

The Southern California modern and contemporary art fair will showcase both local and international artists and bring together art galleries, institutions, collectors and dealers in one big art world melting pot. Its goal? To continue to celebrate and promote Los Angeles as an international art capital. A slew of companion pieces to Art Platform will have your mind reeling from all the cultural stimulation: lectures about collecting fine art photography, exhibitions of avant garde Gutai art from Japan and access to the newest art book releases of ARTBOOK | D.A.P. (Art Platform)
