Fame does have clout in the legal system, and this is another example of the unfairness of celebrity justice as Chris Brown gets a mere slap on the wrist for failing a drug test.

Brown appeared in a hearing on Sept. 24 for a probation progress report related to his 2009 felony battery of then-girlfriend Rihanna, of which he was sentenced to five years of probation and more than 1,400 hours of “labor-oriented service.” According to the probation report documents, the singer tested positive for marijuana in a drug test taken in Virginia, where he was performing his court-ordered community service.

The details of the probation report show that Brown apparently smoked weed in California, where he has a medical marijuana prescription. However, smoking marijuana in Virginia is illegal – prescription or not – so by asking to be located in Virginia, Brown was bound by law to follow Virginia law. Nevertheless, Los Angeles Judge Patricia Schnegg did NOT add on further punishment or give him jail-time, even though he clearly violated the terms of his probation.

Since his 2009 battery charge, Brown has not given up his propensity to violence. He has been associated with several tussles, one which famously involved Drake in a bloody nightclub brawl. Just several days ago, he was a part of an incident at a Subway, where he and his possé harassed an elderly lady working there because they did not want to pay for extra meat. Good thing a bystander got between them before Brown was charged with another count of battery, but the man was let go only after being shouted at with racial slurs and chased around with a stun gun.

It seems that Brown will never learn that violence is not the answer, and his lack of stricter punishment does not help either. At the hearing, Los Angeles Judge Patricia Schnegg merely scolded him, stating, “You know a lot of people look up to you…a lot of kids, so your conduct is important. I’m going to remind you that what you do and what you say impacts other people, and so you should also be conscious of that and basically conduct yourself accordingly.”

Only time will tell if he follows the judge’s advice. Schnegg has since ordered Brown’s case back to California, where he resides now.
