Though only 27 years old, designer Olivier Rousteing was clearly channelling the '80s for his spring 2013 collection at Balmain. Contrasting

yellow and blue or black and white ruled the runway, as did exaggerated shoulders and skinny, cropped trousers. But the wild print, tromp l'oeil and signature decadence was underscored by Rousteing's usual intense attention to detail. The models' clean faces and minimally pulled-back hair played second fiddle to the look-at-me clothes.

Taking Balmain's usual over-the-top embellishments and putting his own spin on them, Rousteing added jewels to intricate wicker-woven jackets and dresses, creating lighter, exuberant pieces perfect for spicing up springtime classics. The black and white oversized jacket would be an eye-catching update to spring's classic, sweet little white dress, white a structured leather skirt can work for the office and the street.

Looking past the '80s power shoulders and crop tops, the collection offered a slew of statement separates that are surprising wearable for anyone prepared to take a few risks. The printed pants trend showed up with black and white checkers on cropped trousers, while a chambray or wicker crop top seems a modern pairing with a pencil skirt.

Ultimately, the collection's message was to do it big - whether it's with huge padded shoulders, enormous wide-legged pants or wacky wicker or stripes. Minimalism? The Balmain girl is too busy partying.
