A curated list of some of L.A.’s best upcoming book events.

Roar Shack Reading Series Presents: Past Is Prologue | Sept. 9 | 5-7 pm | Stories Bookstore in Echo Park

Roar Shack, a collective filled with artists and writers, unites to present an evening full of poetry, writing, music and live writing. What is live writing you may ask? A little something that Roar Shack devised wherein the audience votes on a writing prompt upon arrival, then the winning prompt is presented to two authors reading and two members of the audience who will write to that prompt onstage for all to see. The audience then votes on their favorite story written that will be developed for the next reading series! Poet David Hernandez, writer and Editor-in-Chief of Author magazine Bill Kenower, July Live Write winner Ameni Rosza and musician Robert Morgan Fisher will be the main entertainment for this evening of words, wit and more.

Tim Gunn at the Grove | Sept. 11 | 7 pm | Barnes and Noble at the Grove

See the man with the excellent vocabulary and dapper personal style to match talk about his latest book, “Tim Gunn’s Fashion Bible: The Fascinating History of Everything in Your Closet ” at the Grove. A jaunt through the annals of fashion history, the book recounts the stories behind the articles of clothing in your closet that date from the ancient Greeks up to the present. The candid Project Runway mentor gives his own commentary as he guides you through the fashion world’s hits and misses over time. Get a wristband when you buy Gunn’s book earlier in the day and see the sartorialist that night.

Amy Ephron at Book Soup | Sept. 13 | 7 pm | Book Soup

Amy Ephron will discuss and sign her newest “Loose Diamonds…and other things I’ve lost and found along the way,” a collection of humorous stories spanning her life from childhood through divorce and remarriage. At times profound and hilarious, the book explores the happiest and the hardest parts of Ephron’s life. An eccentric and very memorable cast of characters pepper the pages and help to make Ephron’s story a unique and compelling one. And the reasoning behind the book’s title? She just might explain the allure behind buying loose diamonds...
