Apple confirmed Tuesday the upcoming announcement of the iPhone 5, reported Mashable, a move largely uncharacteristic of the company.

Speculation of an imminent iPhone 5 release first sparked when the company sent out media invitations for a September 12 event. The invitation featured a large "12" to represent the date and casts a shadow in the shape of a "5." The "5" is largely believed to foreshadow the unveiling of Apple's newest smartphone.

Sources have reported the iPhone 5 could sport a larger screen, increasing from a 3.5-inch screen to four inches corner to corner. Additional rumors suggest that the company will also release a smaller version of the iPad.

Apple has called the media's bluff twice now on upcoming product announcements, the first time last fall when the iPhone 4S assumed the namesake of the predicted iPhone 5 moniker. In March, Apple stumped the press once more when "the new iPad" was released in place of an iPad 3 or iPad HD.

Shares in the company rose 0.6 percent to $669.44 following the announcement.

The event will kick off at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.
