Akin will continue with the help of former Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich who helped raise money for him in St. Louis on Monday. Tuesday was the last day for Akin to get a court order to withdraw and be removed from the November ballot. 

Akin said at Monday’s campaign event that he anticipates national Republican groups will resume their support in the days before the election when he attempts to beat Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.

“I think the money’s going to be coming,” Akin said.

Akin gained national attention for the “legitimate rape” comment he made in an Aug. 19 interview. He has repeatedly apologized for his statements.

After the interview, the National Republican Senatorial Committee and Crossroads GPS said they wouldn’t spend money on the contest with Akin as the nominee, according to Bloomberg. 

Jennifer Duffy, who tracks Senate races for the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, told the news organization that Akin is “seriously kidding himself” if he thinks the groups will resume their support.

Akin said at a Tuesday news conference that the people of Missouri spoke when they elected him the Republican Party’s nominee against McCaskill, USA Today reported. 

“It’s not really my decision,” he said. “I have one purpose going into November and that’s replacing Claire McCaskill.”
