RS freshman Max Wittek is officially the second-string quarterback (Neon Tommy/Shotgun Spratling).

Due to changes to guidelines for covering USC practice, media is no longer allowed to provide information on injuries, as well as report on observations that may be considered game strategy -- such as depth, position moves, special formations and the like.

Any information relayed to media during interview sessions is reportable, so we will continue to bring you new and fresh coverage as we adapt to the new media guidelines.

A BACKUP IS NAMED: The race to become Matt Barkley’s backup has been settled. Redshirt freshman Max Wittek secured the number two job, Lane Kiffin said Tuesday. Kiffin noted that, ideally, both Wittek and fellow RS FR Cody Kessler would be able to see the field this season. Also, Kiffin made a point to mention that the quarterback competition would resume in the spring, and that the current depth does not reflect on either guy being the favorite to replace Barkley as the starter next year.

SUMMER FUN: With classes at USC under way, summer for the Trojans is officially over. When asked on Tuesday what the highlight of his summer was, Lane Kiffin quickly replied, “Signing Silas Redd.”

Redd, who transferred from Penn State, found his name beside Curtis McNeal’s on the top of the depth chart this week. No wonder it made Kiffin’s summer; quality tailbacks are hard to come by.

SCHOLARSHIP UPDATE: Scholarship talk is common around USC these days. As most know, the Trojans are limited to 75 scholarships, as opposed to the NCAA maximum of 85, due to NCAA sanctions. To accommodate the transfer of RB Silas Redd, one player who previously was on scholarship, or one incoming freshman, would lose theirs. Kiffin noted today that LB Will Andrew, a one-time walk on who was awarded a scholarship last year, did not have his scholarship renewed. However, because USC currently sits at 74 scholarship players, there is a chance that Andrew could regain his scholarship if incoming freshman Darreus Rogers does not qualify academically.
