An employee of the U.N. World Food Programme was shot and killed in the Sudanese border state of South Kordofan, according to Reuters.

Two unknown gunmen opened fire on a U.N. vehicle Saturday. The driver was killed and one other passenger in the car was injured. The driver, Jamal Al Fadil Farag Allah, was married with five children. He is the first WFP employee to be killed in Sudan, AFP reported.

The army has been fighting an insurgency in the border region for more than a year. More than 200,000 people have fled the worsening humanitarian crisis.

The shooting occured on the same day the African Union announced that Sudan, the United Nations, the AU and the Arab League had reached an agreement to allow for humanitarian access to the border states of South Kordofan and Blue Nile.

Sudan has accused South Sudan of supporting the rebel fighters there. South Sudan has officially denied any involvement.
