Syrian opposition forces claim to have shot down a fighter jet, producing footage of what they claim is the captured pilot of that jet, BBC reported.

Syria's state-run news agency, Sana, said the plane crashed due to mechanical failures.

The jet was shot down near the town of al-Muhassan, around 75 miles from the Iraqi border. The Free Syrian Army said one man in the two-man crew died, while the pilot has been captured.

Footage provided by the rebels showed what appeared to be a Russian-manufactured MIG-23 jet loaded with air-to-ground missiles which burst into flames after being hit by anti-aircraft missiles. Photos posted online earlier this week showed rebel forces in possession of a surface-to-air missile system.

Meanwhile, the government forces have continued to bomard Aleppo, according to reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
