Police in South Africa opened fire on striking miners in South Africa on Thursday, leaving at least seven dead, the BBC reported. Some reports put the death toll at 12 or higher.

Al Jazeera has video of the firefight.

Members of the militant Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union were protesting at Marikana, the third-largest platinum mine in the world. Protestors fired what is reported as either Molotov cocktails or grenades at police, who responded by opening fire.

This is the latest deadly clash in a series of violent protests at mines owned by Lonmin. Thursday's death toll adds to the ten kiled in protests since Friday.

The AMCU is a militant union which has demanded higher wages for workers. Lonmin has called the strike illegal and threatened to fire workers who do not return to work by Friday.
