Katy Perry, you need a reality check. While everyone’s favorite bubblegum scented songstress was running all over town TGIF-ing with neon spandex and Rebecca Black, Friday nights, by association, experienced a meteoric rise in the hearts of the fun-loving and pop-cultured everywhere. However, in the light of kitschy, catchy lyrics (Think I need a ginger-ale, that was such an epic fail!), it seems the world forgot about Friday night’s original, much darker ascension into fame with a little masked murderer named Jason Voorhees. Tuesday night’s episode, “The Kahn Game” took the opportunity to besmirch Katy Perry’s weekend welcoming legacy by bringing Friday evenings back to their rightful terror-tory. So, how did the little liars cope with all their Friday night frights, spites, and good, old-fashioned girl fights? Let’s take it from the top.

The episode began, not surprisingly, Friday morning, when Aria and Spencer made a stop at The Brew for a little caffeination and deliberation over whether it’s better to go through life as a Velma or a Daphne. Aria tried to peak Spencer’s interest about the presence of a mystery stamp (also seen on Holden) on Maya’s wrist during one of her videos. But it wasn’t enough, Spencer wanted out of the “A” game. She was done sneaking around and chasing clues all over town. It was over for her the second she realized she was so busy worrying about “A” that she forgot to send in her early admissions UPenn application. Oops. But who was to appear and save the day with an invitation to a party where one UPenn admissions counselor would be in attendance than CeCe Drake. At first she baited the girls with the invite, but finally gave in when Spencer refused to stop staring at her awkwardly. That’s a new way to get what you want.

Mrs. Marin should have tried the same tactic when a Rosewood police officer (not Officer Wilden) showed up at her house with a court order for a sample of Hanna’s blood. She has 5 days to comply. Luckily, Mrs. Marin is a better mother than most on this show and took matters into her own hands, dialing up Mrs. Hastings right away. Now what could those two be up to?

At school, Hanna had her own uncomfortable encounter – with Caleb. Now that her ex-boyfriend was back from California, they could resume the longing and tortured stares across the hallway. As if their relationship wasn’t angst ridden enough (This isn’t “Twilight” you know), Caleb decided the first thing he wanted to say to Hanna after their breakup was a question about Spencer’s whereabouts. That’s great, ask about another woman. He gave Hanna a note with the login info for Maya’s website to pass on to Spencer, and stuck around just long enough for the cordial small talk to become unbearably painful to watch before darting off to class. Hanna’s morning only got worse as she promptly received a text saying, “The Apple Rose Grille at closing time. Go alone or Caleb pays. –A”

Undecided about her potential participation in “A’s” game, Hanna sought out Spencer for advice on the newest taunt. Spencer begged Hanna not to go. She was already worried sick about Toby, who apparently left town on his master tAkedown mission, and didn’t need another person she loved being in danger. It seems the only not miserable person in Rosewood is Emily, who Spencer and Hanna saw canoodling with Paige across the courtyard. The girls conspired to keep Maya’s website a secret from Emily for right now, not wanting to mess up her newfound happiness.

After school, Aria made her way to Ezra’s apartment, tasked with the prickly chore of letting her darling Mr. Fitz know that his mother tried to buy their breakup. As she neared his apartment, Aria heard Ezra arguing loudly with a mystery man about not taking an offer. The mystery man made a dramatic exit, running into Aria in the hallway and introducing himself as Wesley… Ezra’s brother. Um, what? Aria immediately assumed that the offer at hand was from the breakup artist, Mama Fitzgerald, which seemed to not surprise or anger Ezra at all. Turns out it was all a botched car sale that was costing Ezra more than he had, and forcing him to accept money from his estranged family. Aria wanted to know more, but Ezra curtly excused himself from his own apartment, leaving Aria, and us, with about a thousand unanswered questions.

Hanna and Spencer’s plan to hide the website from Emily came crashing down after school, when Em straight up asked Hanna if any progress had been made. Hanna immediately fessed up, explaining that they hadn’t seen her this happy since Maya, and they didn’t want to ruin it. Emily told Hanna that it wasn’t up to them to protect her and got the login information so she could access the website herself.

After Ezra ditched her so suddenly, Aria sought solace from Spencer’s bed. The queen size canopy provided the required support to a “despondent” Aria. Spencer finally coaxed her friend out of bed when she actively contemplated wearing her mother’s dress to the party. Aria picked out a shirt and a skirt at the front of Spencer’s closet (seriously… actually though… seriously? How could they even believe that we would remotely believe that’s all it takes for these girls to get dressed?) and the girls headed back to bed to discuss the downside of having an extremely rich family. When Spencer was 10, her nana paid her $200 to shave her father’s sideburns in his sleep. She did it. Ha.

As the sun set, (yes, officially bringing us to … all together now… Friday night), CeCe, Spencer, and Aria arrived at the mystery party, hosted by none other than the Kahn family. As in Noel Kahn. As in Aria and Mona’s ex-boyfriend who figured out Ezria (while Ezra was still a teacher at the high school) and got expelled when “A” framed him for cheating. As in one angry son of a b. CeCe gave her name at the entrance and the girls were all stamped with the same symbol Maya and Holden had previously displayed. So that’s what it meant.

Inside the party, CeCe confiscated Spencer’s application and urged the girls to have a good time while she’d take care of the UPenn admissions guy. She brought her “ducklings” to the game room, where she reunited with Eric Kahn (Noel’s older brother) and challenged him to a friendly game of Truth. It’s like Truth or Dare without the dare. Seems harmless enough, right?

In Rosewood, Hanna was getting ready to leave for her meeting with “A”, when her mother intercepted, offering to make them a nice dinner. However, Hanna knows her mother only cooks when she has bad news, and asks to just know what’s wrong. Mrs. Marin comes clean about the court order for Hanna’s blood, and tells her that Mrs. Hastings is working on blocking it from a legal aspect. Hanna didn’t seem too perturbed and excused herself to go meet with “Aria”, giving Mrs. Marin the perfect opportunity to call up a hopefully hungry Pastor Ted.

Who else was not so surprised to see Caleb show up to Hanna’s meeting with “A”? Hanna told Caleb to leave. Caleb told Hanna that he’s “A” so get in the car. Stupidly enough, she did. Caleb thought Hanna was scared. He was wrong, she’s freaking out. He thought that because he had figured out that there is another “A” out there that they can be together again. Hanna stormed out of the car, yelling at him that he doesn’t understand. This “A” is dangerous. This “A” dug up Ali’s grave. This “A” might have killed Maya because she knew something she shouldn’t have. This “A” ran his mother off the road in Montecito.

Back at the party, Spencer and Aria spotted Noel … and Jenna. Figures the two creepiest people in Rosewood are dating. Noel clearly holds resentment towards Aria and challenged her to a game of Truth. During the game, Noel aggressively went after Aria and Ezra’s relationship, asking her where she met her boyfriend and if she ever had sex with her teacher. Aria worded her answer cleverly – no, she never had sex with her teacher. It’s true. By the time Aria and Ezra got around to doing the nasty, he had been unemployed from Rosewood High for a couple months. Aria asked about Maya’s presence at the parties and where Noel was the night Ali’s grave was dug up. Maya had an open invitation to the parties, and he was at the cabin with Jenna for a while that night. Noel’s last question got straight to the point – Who is your boyfriend and what was his job for the first few months of your relationship? Times up!!! Jenna answered for Aria, saying, “It’s ok Aria, we already know the answer.” Oooh, burn.

Aria stormed out of the party, furious with Noel and with herself for almost saying something that could’ve endangered Ezra. Spencer tried to calm her down and offered to stay at the party to get more info out of Jenna (who she immediately challenged to a game of Truth once Aria and Noel’s was done), while Aria went home. CeCe found her ducklings and told Aria that she is “so much prettier than Jenna”, clearly misdiagnosing the tension for leftover romantic sentiment. Aria called Ezra, and reached Wes instead, who offered to pass the message onto Ezra and asked for the address. Aria really should have seen his next move coming…

Inside the party, Jenna confided in Noel that she was not willing to be bullied by Spencer Hastings again, and Noel told her that this game was the perfect opportunity to ask Spencer anything she wants. If y’all though Aria and Noel’s game was uncivil, Spencer and Jenna’s was a bloodbath. Jenna went after Melissa and Emily, revealing that she could take Spencer down if she needed to. Spencer wanted to know more about what happened that night with Emily, besides the obvious truth that Jenna wasn’t alone. Check here for an in depth review of the information learned during this vicious game of truth. I mean it, check it. Do it!!

Just as no one was surprised when Caleb came to pick Hanna up from the Grille, it was only too obvious when Wes came to bring Aria home instead of Ezra. He wanted to let Aria know that they got off on the wrong foot, he really is “a nice person.” Suuure. Aria calls his BS right away and accuses him of never giving her message to Ezra at all. He claimed his brother is “detained” at the moment. Aria chided the Fitzgerald family, telling Wes that his kin went one-step beyond dysfunctional – they were hostile. “So he told you about Maggie?” Wes asked. Umm, no. The younger Mr. Fitzgerald explained that when Ezra was a teenager, he got his girlfriend pregnant. Mrs. Fitzgerald paid her to take care of it. Judging by Aria’s appalled expression, Wes figured out Ezra hadn’t told her at all. Oops? Yeah, right.

Back in Rosewood, Caleb was enthusiastically explaining his plan to find out who the second “A” is to Hanna, who seemed more pissed off than anything. He wants her to prepare herself in case they are revealed to be someone close to her again, like Mona. Foreshadowing?? Then they gave in to their overwhelming emotions and made out… in public. No big deal.

At the party, Spencer found CeCe, clearly fresh from some Eric-Kahn-loving, and asked why she was made to come to this party at all. Spencer didn’t believe that a UPenn admissions counselor was ever there at all. CeCe tells her duckling to calm down; she already saw the guy and handed over Spencer’s application.

Mrs. Marin and Pastor Ted’s romantic dinner was cut short when Officer Wilden called her, badgering her about Hanna’s blood sample. After talking to Mrs. Hastings one last time for the day, she apologized to Ted for ruining their dinner. She explained that a “deranged cop” was after her daughter. I think that is the absolutely perfect way to describe Officer Wilden – deranged. Mrs. Marin was wooed when Pastor Ted didn’t pass judgment on her or Hanna, and then they made out. In private this time, thank God.

Unlike the rest of her friends, Emily spent Friday night in, just her and her laptop and dozens of videos of her dead ex-girlfriend. Em got pretty emotional watching videos of Maya talking about their relationship or reading poetry, crying and caressing her computer screen. This only made it even more awkward when Paige walked in. Luckily, Em’s gal pal was completely understanding of all the emotion. It was the first time Emily heard Maya’s voice again, after all. Paige empathized with a story about her deceased grandfather, and a home video that included a full frame shot of her 70-year-old grandpa’s backside, complete with the tattoo of a tulip. Between Spencer’s nana and this, what in all hell is going on with the old people in these girls’ lives?

Aria arrived at Ezra’s apartment just as he did, and immediately demanded to know the truth about Maggie. He asked her to come inside but she wouldn’t, not until he told her what really happened. He explained that he got Maggie pregnant the summer after graduation. He was scared and Maggie was scared and they thought Mrs. Fitzgerald would be able to help. Unfortunately her idea of handling it was paying Maggie off, with the agreement that she never contacts Ezra again. Mrs. Fitzgerald was determined to keep her son on track, and that didn’t involve him being a father at 18. Unfortunately for her, this hideous act was the spark for Ezra to move away from home, disinherit himself, and effectively become Mr. Fitz. He asked Aria to come inside again, and she did, though the look on her face was one shade shy of total devastation.

Back home from the party, Spencer called Toby, and left a voicemail, telling him how much she misses him and is worried about him. She heard a chime from her laptop and was ecstatic to see an email of receipt of her application to UPenn. So all ends on a happy note, right?

Well, not quite. In our final “A” scene of the night, the mysterious figure accepted an apartment key (for apartment A, what else?) from an old cat lady named Mrs. Pillsbury.

So that’s it for this week. What do we think here? Are Hanna and Caleb going to get back together? Is anyone else creeped out that their hair is the exact same length? What about Wren? Are Aria and Ezra headed for splitsville? Did anyone else have the horrible thought that Wes would be an awesome (and slightly more age appropriate) match for her too? Did CeCe really give the application to the UPenn admissions guy? Was the email just another part of “A’s” awful plan? How much longer can we pretend that Jenna isn’t completely part of the “A” team?

Speaking of – in the countdown to August 28’s finale. “The BetrAyal”, ABC Family has released a compilation of 12 suspects from whom the traitor will be revealed. Some surprising faces (Jenna, Wren, Cece) are missing from the list. Right now, as per audience votes, Paige is the #1 suspect, followed closely by Ezra, Lucas, and Melissa. What do you think? Check it out here.

Next week, watch “A” kick this game into high gear, with a nasty trap for our little liars…
