Norway Shooter Declared Sane, Sentenced to Prison
Breivik faces at least 21 years in prison for the attacks he carried out in July 2011. The sentence can be repeatedly extended if authorities believe he is still a danger to society.
According to The Los Angeles Times, Breivik smiled as a summary of the verdict was read. He confessed to planting a car bomb in the center of Oslo’s government district and then hunting down and killing 69 people, mostly teenagers, at a political youth camp on the island of Utoya. He denies that they were a criminal act and said his actions were an attempt to save Norway from multiculturalism and a Muslim takeover.
Two teams of court-ordered psychiatrists presented conflicting views on his sanity. One declared him delusional and a paranoid schizophrenic with a warped view of reality. A second evaluation found him to be in his right mind. The five judges who reached the verdict agreed with the view that Breivik was sane.
The verdict came after a 10-week trial and two months of deliberation. Breivik showed no remorse throughout the trial for his killing spree, shedding tears only when he watched a propaganda video that he made to spread his anti-Islam views.
