Nisei Week Japanese Festival Sweeps Through Little Tokyo
The 72nd Annual Nisei Week Japanese Festival came to a close Sunday with Ondo street dancing. The ceremony began with a special Taiko performance by Chikara Daiko, and followed with the traditional “Ondo” or “street dancing.” Festival organizers encouraged all to participate—young and old. All were dressed in yukata (Japanese summer kimono) or in shorts and T-shirts.
The festival was organized by the Nisei Week Foundation, which was established in 1999 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. According to its website, the foundation’s mission is to promote Japanese and Japanese-American heritage, preserving tradition while bringing together Southern California's diverse communities through arts and cultural education.
