A 15-year-old male student opened fire on the first day of classes Monday at a Baltimore County high school, wounding a classmate before being subdued by teachers, CBS News reported.

The suspect, who hit the 17-year-old male victim with two shots, was taken into custody after the shooting. Baltimore County Police Chief James Johnson said officers do not believe the victim was an intended target.

A hospital spokeswoman said the teen who was shot is in critical condition. Both the suspect and victim are students at Perry Hall High School.

Johnson said the shooter walked into the cafeteria at about 10:45 a.m. and pulled out a gun. The suspect fired one shot, while a second shot went off as he was being restrained by teachers.

"We have some heroic and brave faculty members," Schools Superintendent Dallas Dance said. "They responded very quickly to minimize damage."

CBS Baltimore reported that the shooting may have stemmed from a bullying incident. School officials say they expect the school to reopen Tuesday with enhanced security.
