Tropical Storm Isaac pummeled the Gulf states Monday as it blew over the Florida Keys and hit the open Gulf of Mexico Monday, the Washington Post reported.

The storm has the potential to become a Category 1 hurricane before it makes landfall Tuesday. Evacuations may be necessary along the Gulf Coast, sending many to board up homes and stock up on supplies.

Isaac is headed for New Orleans, which will mark the seven-year anniverary of Hurricane Katrina on Wednesday. Federal Emergency Management Agency officials have assured that the improved levy system was designed to handle much larger storms. Some of the heaviest impact is expected in Alabama or Mississippi, however.

The Republican National Convention was officially called to order Monday but will recess until Tuesday due to the severe weather.

Some state delegations, including Alabama, were not present for the few minutes that the convention convened. Several officials have had to return to their state to assist in preparations for Isaac.

The RNC is scheduled to reconvene Tuesday.
