Egypt Bombs Suspected Terrorists In Sinai Peninsula

Just days after 16 Egyptian soldiers were killed in an ambush headed by Islamic militants, Egypt launched a missile air strike around the town of Sheikh Zuwaid. The Telegraph reported that an Egyptian military official in Sinai said 20 terrorists were killed. Further details were given in a statement from the Egyptian army:

"Elements from the armed forces and interior ministry supported by the air force began a plan to restore security by pursuing and targeting armed terrorist elements in Sinai, and it has accomplished this task with complete success."

The Washington Post reported that this attack raised questions about the readiness of the Egyptian troops, who were apparently warned by Israeli forces that an attack in that area was imminent. This comes at a time when al-Qaida-inspired militant groups have become increasingly active in the wake of Dictator Hosni Mubarak's removal from power.
