Several earthquakes, one of them registering 6.4, hit northwestern Iran Saturday afternoon, leaving over 180 people dead and leaving over 1,300 people injured.

According to the LA Times, the earthquakes originated around the town of Ahar, and while the town itself was left in tact, four villages near Ahar were destroyed and 60 villages were heavily damaged.

While rescue efforts are underway, teams are having a hard time reaching villagers due to the mountainous geography of the region. However, officials say that the death toll has remained relatively small due to the region's sparse population.
