Dozens of bodies were found Saturday in a Damascus suburb that activists have called the focus of a campaign by Syrian troops to wipe out rebels and their sympathizers, The New York Times reported.

Between 40 and 50 bodies were found in the town of Daraya, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The town had suffered heavy shelling and army raids.

Most of the victims were found on Saturday in a building’s basement, activists told The New York Times. Among the dead were eight members of one family, including three children and their mother.

Activists estimated more than 100 people have been killed since Wednesday.
