Get a much-needed dose of live music this week from a festival to a concert, eat your heart out at the county fair and absorb the words and photos of a rock 'n roll photographer.

Who needs birthday cake when you have deep-fried cookie dough? Surely not the L.A County Fair, kicking off its 90th birthday this Labor Day weekend by treating guests to several new whimsical and mouthwatering treats, including deep-fried cereal and lemon and lime cheesecake in an edible dough cone. Other tasty fare to try at the fair? How about a two-pound beef rib on a stick? Fair food master Chicken Charlie will also unveil the Pineapple Express—shrimp and white rice served up in a pineapple.  Classic fair favorites like funnel cake, corn dogs and frozen lemonade will still make an appearance, but why not celebrate 90 fantastic years with something a little different? FYF Fest | Sept. 1-2 | noon-midnight | L.A. Historic State Park

In its 9th year, FYF has grown from just a dingy one-day music festival to a jam-packed weekend extravaganza that is guaranteed to satisfy the palate of any self-proclaimed music snob. While major music festivals are changing to accommodate the rapidly growing EDM culture, FYF, has remained for the most part, close to its roots, booking mostly punk, noise and indie rock acts. Concertgoers this year will not only be treated to headliners Refused, M83, The Faint and Beirut but also a fresh crop of emerging talent such as FIDLAR, Nick Waterhouse, and Allah-las among many others. Although weekend passes may be steep, at about $90, with over 70 musical and comedic acts—including a performance by David Cross of Arrested Development fame—FYF is bound to be most fun you’ll have this Labor Day weekend. Gotye | Sept. 4 | 7p.m. | Greek Theatre

It was impossible to miss "Somebody That I Used To Know" (and its thousands of parodies) in the past year, but there's much more to Wally De Becker than that plaintive breakup duet with Kimba. Catch his folk-pop act in full at the Greek Theatre this Tuesday, alongside fellow indie-leaning guests Chairlift and Jonti. De Becker's musical repertoire is a lot richer than his one-hit wonder status might suggest, so don't miss a chance to see him at the Greek before he comes back around at a bigger (read: expensive) venue. Ed Colver: Living in Chaos: Capturing the Birth of L.A. Hardcore | Sept. 6 |  6:30-8 pm | Annenberg Space for Photography 

Whether you know it or not, you are probably familiar with Ed Colver's images. They have been on over 400 album covers from bands like Black Flag and Social Distortion to Aerosmith and the Red Hot Chili Peppers over the years. Now, as part of the "Iris Nights" lecture series and the Who Shot Rock & Roll exhibition, Colver will speak about his photographs of L.A.'s hardcore punk scene. A self-taught photographer, Colver shot the scene with his 35 mm camera for over 33 years--and still refuses to have a published phone number of business cards. The only thing not punk about it: getting tickets online in advance is recommended otherwise there will be a standby list starting at 5 pm. (Annenberg Space for Photography)
