Staff Reporters |
August 18, 2012 | 12:16 a.m. PDT

City Shortlist is a weekly roundup of the city's best events handpicked by NT staffers.

This week, cellphone art and fashion iconoclasts take over the city, while free drinks and cinematic costumes are ongoing events.

LA Mobile Arts Festival 2012 | August 18-August 25 | Various times | Santa Monica Art Studios Arena 1
Mobile digital photography, a.k.a. iPhoneography and mobile digital arts unite in this group exhibition of over 100 local and international artists. The 9-day event promises to be an innovative and interactive experience, one that will make you think differently about your iPhone and art. Start with the Venice Beach Photowalk on Saturday at 10 a.m. then see where the day takes you--and your smartphone! (LAMAF)

Betsey Johnson @ Nordstrom | August 18 | 3-4:30pm | The Grove
Fashion lovers and celeb watchers don't need any more reasons to go to The Grove, but we're gonna give you one anyway. Iconically irreverent designer Betsey Johnson designed a shoe, aptly titled the Anniversary, for the 10th anniversary of The Grove, and she's going to the sprawling shopping center's Nordstrom location to kick off the shoe's launch in person. Try the hot pink pumps on, grab a pic with Johnson, and pick up some free Nordstrom swag while you're at it. (Flavorpill)

Cinespia Summer Camp | August 18-19 | 7 p.m.-6 a.m. | Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Remember those sleepovers from middle school where you would stuff your face with too much junk food, pull pranks on whoever falls to sleep the fastest and gossip till wee hours of the morning? Cinespia, L.A.’s premier organization for outdoor film screenings, is bringing back those glorious memories from our preteen years, if only for a night. The Hollywood Forever Cemetery will be open all night starting Saturday with a screening of the cult classic “Wet Hot American Summer” to kick off the festivities. In between films, guests are able to partake in various camp activities (lanyards, anyone?) or dance to the tunes of DJs from Cut Chemist and Dublab, among others. (Cinespia)

Wednesday's @ Sunset | Every Wed. until Aug. 29 | 6 p.m.-11 p.m. | The London West Hollywood
Happy hours are a dime a dozen here in L.A., but have you ever found one where drinks are free? You read that right, enjoy complimentary cocktails and gourmet samples for the first hour at The London's rooftop happy hour. Wednesday's @ Sunset are also the only day of the week non hotel guests are given access to the hotel's pool deck. Make this event a truly relaxing night by taking advantage of the marble fire pit, carved teak benches, DJ tunes and of course... the pool. Entry is free, but reservations are required. (Wednesday's @ Sunset)

Art of Television Costume Design | Now - Oct 6. | 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. | FIDM
Are you a costume buff? Maybe you just really like watching television? Well, now you can take a look at the outfits from some of your favorite shows--from Dany's Qarth outfit in "Game of Thrones" to Emily/Amanda's killer red dress from "Revenge." The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandizing is hosting their sixth annual exhibit celebrating the costume design that goes into the top shows of this latest television season.  The exhibit is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, and admission is free. There's even a small shop attached to the exhibit, if you're inclined to shop for some unique items. (FIDM)
