This week, expect some sweet treats at a watermelon festival and some good eats at a summer staple, or take in some uniquely-L.A. art and film.
We Are Talking Pyramids | August 12 | 1pm-6pm | Levitt Pavilion
Get your creative juices flowing this Sunday with an event that is bound stimulate and inspire you. The Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA), a non-profit organization dedicated to providing the underserved youth academic, arts, and athletic programs will debut an interactive arts project by local artists and HOLA alumni. Titled “We Are Talking Pyramids,” the installation will feature sculptural, video, and musical performance designed to engage and interact with the public. Sunset-Tujunga Watermelon Festival | August 10-12 | noon-11:30pm | Sunland Park
If you're looking for a day of rides and food without the hustle and bustle of Southern California's more well-known fairs, check out the Sunset-Tujunga Watermelon Festival. Now in its 51st year the festival offers live music, games, carnival rides and free all-you-can-eat watermelon. What better way to beat the summer heat than with free watermelon? Chinatown Summer Nights | August 11 | 5pm-12am | 943 - 951 N. Broadway
Back by popular demand, the third annual Chinatown Summer Nights promises to be spectacular with a fresh lineup of great food, art and music. Chinatown Summer Nights offers an unique and immersive experience outside of the usual summer festival fare. Visitors will be able to experience the many culinary offerings of Chinatown through Iron Chef-style cooking competitions, dining by local restaurants serving authentic Chinese and Asian cuisine and non-stop noshing at LA's best gourmet food trucks. Music combined with interactive art pulses through the night--from dancing on Chinatown's large outdoor dance floor with KCRW DJs Jason Bentley, Jeremy Sole, Anthony Valadez, Valida and more, to curated large-scale outdoor video projections. "Bluetopia: The L.A. Dodgers Movie" | August 16 | 7pm | 5814 Wilshire Boulevard
Take me out to the ball game~ Baseball fans, and particularly LA baseball fans, keep your Thursday night open. The Craft and Folk Art Museum, located a stone's throw away from LACMA, is screening "Bluetopia: The LA Dodgers Movie" for free with museum admission. The 88-minute film focuses on a bunch of the Dodger faithful, and is as much a love letter to the team's fans as it is to the team. Director Timothy Marx will be introducing the film and will also take questions after the screening. (CAFAM)
