A resident physician at the University of Michigan was charged with possession of child pornography in December after a hospital supervisor, considering the Jerry Sandusky scandal, remembered six-month-old accusations against the physician that hadn’t led to an investigation, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Federal prosecutors charged Stephen Jenson and the Department of Education is looking into whether the university violated federal law that required them to report the child porn allegations.

From the Los Angeles Times:

…a co-worker had reported seeing the child porn six months earlier. The co-worker briefly caught a glimpse of what she thought was child pornography on a computer Jenson had been using in a medical residents' lounge. She told a supervisor, who then told another supervisor, who told another official and so on and so on, until at least eight Michigan employees knew about the child porn allegations.

After a series of misunderstandings and confusion over who was responsible for the case — and a lack of clear evidence beyond the woman’s allegation — no one reported Jenson to the police.

According to the newspaper, it was in November as Penn State students rioted over coach Joe Paterno’s firing that the first hospital supervisor who had heard the accusations against Jenson started asking why they hadn’t led to an investigation.

Hospital officials met again and contacted the police a week later.

The Department of Education is investigating whether the university violated the Clery Act, which requires university officials to publish information about crimes people report to the university.

Former Penn State football defensive coach Jerry Sandusky was convicted on June 22 of molesting 10 boys over the span of 15 years.

Jenson has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
