Two NATO service members were killed in an insurgent attack in the western region of Afghanistan, the military coalition announced Sunday.

NATO did not release the names or nationalities of those killed. Sunday's announcement brings the death toll in Afghanistan this month to 44, CBS reported.

Insurgent attacks have risen 11 percent over the past three months, USA Today said. That is the highest increase since fighting peaked in the summer of 2010.

NATO also denied claims by Pakistan that it had warned NATO of insurgents crossing the border into Afghanistan more than 52 times in the past several months.

The recent rise in casualties has highlighted concerns over the hand-off of security roles to local forces by 2012.
