Temperatures from the Midwest to the East Coast have decreased slightly from above 100 degrees, down to the 90s, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Cooler air that swept southward was what helped bring the temperatures down up to 15 degrees MSNBC reported. However, MSNBC added, the other reason for the slight reprieve in some areas is due to thunderstorms, which have knocked out power to thousands.

CNN reported that the intense heat wave has caused lasting, in some cases deadly effects.

"The heat wave has left scores dead and hundreds of thousands without power...A 4-month-old girl in Greenfield, Indiana, died after being left in a car for an "extended period of time," police Chief John Jester said. While it wasn't clear how hot it had been inside the car, temperatures in that community of 20,000 people reached 103 degrees."
