Peru has always been a foodie's dream, sporting some of the best food in the world (and according to Frommer's, THE top food destination in the world for this year. Move over France!).

Due to Lima's centuries-old reputation as a destination for immigrants from all over the world, Peruvian food is a fusion of African, Spanish, Italian, Chinese and Japanese cuisine. Lima also has myriad of restaurants cooking up everything from Persian cuisine to Swiss food.

The highlight of my trips to Lima, though, is always a visit to La Folie Cafe.

Serving a blend of Peruvian and international cuisine, La Folie is a great place to go for high tea, coffee or a full course dinner.

All food served here is made with organic and top-grade ingredients making for a delectable experience. It is also a great place to come and savor a recent food development: Italo-Peruvian food. Below is a great example of it, fettuccini with huancaina sauce.

This popular Peruvian sauce, made out of Farmer's cheese, yello chiles, bread and onions blended together, is normally eaten over hard-boiled yellow potatoes and called "Papa a la Huancaina."

But now the creaminess of the sauce paired with the zingy spice of the yellow chiles graces the fettuccini instead; the inclusion of the flambeed filet mignon chunks are reminiscent of yet another Peruvian dish, lomo saltado.

Fusion cuisine magic aside, La Folie also has some beloved classics like eggs benedict and the most amazing desserts like Toblerone cheesecake and La Folie's own creation: the Moulin Rouge Waffle.

One plain and one chocolate waffle topped with a berry blend; two scoops of vanilla ice cream and drizzled warm chocolate. On the side, a glass of Peruvian dulce de leche. Sinfully delicious!

What makes a visit to La Folie so memorable, though, is the ambience: it is a world unto itself. Acting as a restaurant, cafe, art gallery and shop. Every month, La Folie has photo exhibits, book signings and other cultural events for the entire family to come and enjoy the works of Peruvian artists.

If you are ever in Lima, Peru, I highly recommend you stop by for a visit at this one-of-a-kind place. Coming from someone who has been trotting the world since she was practically born, La Folie is a true jewel and should be thought of as a destination unto itself.

La Folie Cafe is located at Angamos Este 1070 in Lima Peru.
