Amelia Earhart went missing 75 years ago while flying from New Guinea to Howland Island, in an attempt to become the first woman to fly around the earth. She was born 115 years ago Tuesday, and in honor of her birthday, a new expedition has been launched to find her plane.

The expedition, led by The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery, cost $2.2 million dollars, and has so far failed to obtain conclusive evidence as to the mystery.

The group believes that Earhart crashed into a reef in the Pacific Ocean, and to that end has collected video and sonar data to examine upon its return.

A voyage, aimed at investigating the land on which Earhart is believed to have survived for a while after the crash, is also planned for next year.
