Romney could potentially create momentum to ride through August when he is expected to announce his vice-presidential choice and appear at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. 

The former Massachusetts governor could also be connected to the broadly unpopular wars in Iraq and Afghanistan because many of his foreign policy advisers are carryovers from the George W. Bush administration, the Herald reported.

“It could be ‘son of Bush,’ the horror movie no one wants to see,” a Germany-based international political consultant, John Hulsman, said to the Herald.

The trip is “an opportunity for the governor to learn and listen,” said his campaign’s policy director, Lanhee Chen.

According to the Herald, Romney will first stop in London where he’ll attend the Summer Olympics; then Israel where he’s scheduled to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad; and end in Poland where he will meet with former President Lech Walesa.

Netanyahu and Walesa have had turbulent relationships with President Obama. 

Though Romney’s trip may be compared to Obama’s 2008 campaign trip overseas during which more than 200,000 people cheered him in Berlin, a foreign policy expert downplayed the perils to the Herald. 

Director of the Europe program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Heather Conley, said, “There are always risks, such as protests, but the benefits outweigh the risks.”
