"You know, it's hard to know just how well it will turn out. There are a few things that were disconcerting,” Romney said in the Guardian.

Although the Romney campaign has attempted to downplay the incident by asserting that Americans don’t care what the foreign press prints, Democrats back in the United States claimed that the former Massachusetts governor is embarrassing the U.S. and himself, the Guardian reported.

The Democratic party put out a video advertisement showcasing negative coverage of Romney’s trip on American news stations, playing up the line, “It’s a good thing the British do not vote in our elections.”

While Democrats used the gaffe as political fodder, the Romney camp tried to shift attention back on President Barack Obama by discussing a new report showing slow economic growth. The U.S. economy grew at an annual rate of 1.5 percent from April through June, down from 2 percent the previous three months, according to the Washington Post.

"It's a picture of a decelerating economy where consumption spending and investment spending have decelerating growth," said Glen Hubbard, who is Romney’s economic adviser.

Romney held more meetings in London on Friday and plans to attend opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics. First Lady Michelle Obama is also expected to appear. The Obama campaign will debut a television advertisement during the opening ceremony talking optimistically about the country, according to U.S. News and World Report:

"We're a nation of growers and doers and dreamers. We work hard for what we get and all we ask for is that our hard work pays off," Obama says in the ad, over images of American farmers.

Obama has been trying to counteract potential damage from comments he made in which he seemed to suggest small business owners owed their success solely to the government. Romney and other Republicans have seized on the comments as evidence of what they say is Obama's disdain for the private sector.

Romney’s next stop during his trip abroad will be Israel. Obama has authorized an additional $70 million in aid to Israel before his GOP rival’s scheduled visit, the Wall Street Journal reported.
