The probe is comprised of a 16-member committee, including a state prosecutor, judges, a top police commander, and six representatives of victims’ families. They will be reopening files from the uprising.

Protesters have been demanding justice for the killings of unarmed protesters. Officials from Mubarak’s interior ministry were charged in the killings, but many of them were acquitted. It is hoped that this probe and fact-finding mission will uncover the truth and allow for those responsible for the killings to be brought to justice.

However, one question still remains: will the committee have the power to investigate the military and hold it accountable for its actions.

The order comes a month after Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison for failing to stop the killings.

The committee is charged with reporting the results of the probe to Morsi within two months.
