Measure Requiring Condoms In Porn Gathers Enough Signatures For Ballot
The initiative received 371,000 signatures in five months to qualify for the ballot, far exceeding the 232,000 required, the LA Times reported. AIDS activists say they support the measure because porn performers are at risk of HIV and other sexually-transmitted diseases.
But the initiative has come under fire from adult movie producers, who say that actors and actresses should have the right to decide whether or not to use condoms. Producers argue that they tried using condoms in the late 90s, but the move was met with negative feedback from consumers, who were not interested in purchasing porn featuring performers wearing condoms, according to the LA Times.
The countywide effort to put the measure up to a vote comes after LA Mayor Antonio Villraigosa signed a city ordinance in January that made it mandatory for performers to wear condoms while filming in areas that required a city filming permit.
