A Colorado judge ruled Tuesday that no cameras or electronic recording equipment will be allowed at the hearing of James Holmes, the suspect in the "Dark Knight Rises" theater shooting.

Reuters reported Arapahoe County District Judge William Sylvester made the decision after media outlets in Denver requested expanded coverage of the July 30 hearing, when he is will be formally charged.

Holmes' attorneys motioned to reject the request. In making his decision, Sylvester debated whether allowing cameras inside the courtroom would infringe upon Holmes' right to a fair trial. Pictures of Holmes' first court appearance went viral Monday after one video and one still camera documented his erratic behavior. The images launched a national discussion on Holmes' mental state and whether he is "mentally unwell, drugged or faking."

The court will remain open to the media and general public.
