The death toll is at 26 and thousands of people remain stranded on Sunday, after three days of heavy rainfall caused flooding and landslides in southern Japan, and The Japan Meteorological Agency warns of more rain and landslides.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that local officials raised the death toll from "the torrential rains in the northern parts of the Kyushu region to 26 and six people remain missing in Kumamoto, Oita and Fukuoka prefectures." The majority of the victims were in their 70s and 80s.

In western Japan, heavy rainfall of up to 3.5 inches per hour flooded around 100 houses each in Kameoka and Kyoto.

While The Japan Meteorological Agency predicts more rain and thunderstorms, they said the worst of it is over.
