Police arrested five people in Anaheim over the weekend when residents stormed police headquarters following the Saturday shooting death of a suspect being chased by officers, ABC News reported.

Officers also arrested one gang member who had been inciting the crowd, in relation to a gang-related killing that occurred in May. Hours after the shooting, residents set a dumpster on fire, and tossed rocks and bottles at police officers who were investigating the shooting. Authorities used rubber bullets and pepper spray in an attempt to calm the crowd.

Police Chief John Welter said the officers involved in the chase approached 25-year-old Manuel Diaz, who they say was a known gang member, because he and two others were acting suspiciously. The officers chased Diaz near an apartment complex where the shooting happened.

Diaz later died at a hospital, while the two suspects who were with him escaped police.

Two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid leave. Welter and Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait are calling for a full independent investigation from the California attorney general.
