Anderson Cooper Comes Out
"The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud," the CNN anchor said.
Cooper said he broke his silence after considering "whether the unintended outcomes of maintaining my privacy outweigh personal and professional principle."
In the preface to Cooper's admission, Sullivan drove home the importance of the visibility of gay public figures, calling it "the core means for our equality." Sullivan also noted the intense pressure and persecution still faced by many homosexual citizens, especially youth.
Cooper said he hopes this revelation, which does not come as a surprise to many who had speculated on the journalist's personal life, doesn't destroy the last bit of personal space he has.
"I do think visibility is important," Cooper said, "more important than preserving my reporter’s shield of privacy."
