City Shortlist: July 21-27

Staff Reporters |
July 21, 2012 | 10:48 a.m. PDT

City Shortlist is a weekly roundup of the city's best events handpicked by NT staffers.

This week's editor-approved list of events combines everything from free muppets and concerts to a tribute of a fantastic foursome that revolutionized the face of music.

BloomfestLA | July 21 (Sat) | 2 p.m.-10 p.m. | DTLA Arts District
If you've never checked out the Arts District, there's probably no better introduction than this spectacular spotlight of food, music, and of course, art. With a bevy of food options including the inimitable Coolhaus Truck and Arts District joints like Urth Caffe and Wurstkuche, music from KCRW faves like The Neighbourhood, and cool installations and exhibits all over the area, there's no better way to spend your Saturday afternoon and evening than by soaking up a uniquely L.A. celebration. All Together Now: A Tribute To The Beatles | July 7 - 29 | 12pm - 8pm; 11am - 10pm (Fri & Sat) | Gallery Nucleus
If you're a fan of the Beatles--and let's face it, most of us are--then you should head on over to Gallery Nucleus down on Main Street this month. While Beatles tributes are a dime a dozen in L.A., this one offers something unique: a celebration of 50 years of the Fab Four. The exhibit features works from diverse artists who have "come together" to honor the music legends. (All Together Now)

KCRW Live @ Who Shot Rock & Roll| July 21 (Sat) | 7p.m.-10p.m. | Annenberg Space for Photography

Nothing captures the essence of summer quite like live music under the stars and local radio station KCRW has been known to throw some of the best shows in town. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of psychedelic rock band, T. Rex’s most influential album, “The Slider,” Alaskan indie rockers Portugal. The Man will take the stage alongside KCRW DJs Dan Wilcox and Gary Calamar at the Annenberg Space for Photography. If last week’s free concert with Moby was any indication to how chaotic attendance can be, then be sure to come and set up camp early. While you are there, check out the space’s current exhibit, “Who Shot Rock & Roll,” to view music photography at its finest. (KCRW)

“The Muppets” Free Screening | July 23 (Mon) | 8:00 p.m. | Cherry Park 1901 E. 45th St. Long Beach, CA

Every summer the city of Long Beach partners with various parks in the area to provide the community with free screenings of family friendly movies. Bring a blanket, some food, and a few friends to fully enjoy the night. The movies are screened from June 25-August 31 (Movies in the Park)

Oufest | July 12-22 | various times | Director’s Guild of America (some screenings are offsite)

Now in its 30th year, Outfest is a film festival that celebrates the LGBT community. The films screened during the festival aim to educate, show the rich diversity of the LGBT community and entertain people from all walks of life. The festival ends this weekend so check out a film before it’s too late. (Outfest)
