I'll Have Another's quest to become horse racing's first Triple Crown winner in 34 years came to an end after tendonitis in his left front leg forced him from Saturday's Belmont Stakes.

Trainer Doug O’Neill and owner J. Paul Reddam decided to retire the three-year-old colt after learning about the injury, according to The New York Times. I’ll Have Another was on the track 5:30 a.m. Friday and came back with some swelling. An ultrasound examination revealed that the horse had early signs of tendonitis in his left front tendon.

I’ll Have Another is the 12th horse since Affirmed, the last Triple Crown champion, to win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, but not the Belmont. The colt could be valuable as a stallion, having gone undefeated in four starts this year.
