Syria Shoots Down Turkish Jet, Turkey Holding Off Response

Turkish officials are debating their next move after learning that Syria shot down one of its aircraft.

Rescuers are searching for the two missing pilots of the plane, as both governments face off over the reason for the plane's downing. The dispute over whether the Turkish craft entered Syrian air space is further inflaming tensions between the two nations, who are already on edge over the protest uprisings in Syria. Turkish forces, alongside forces from other nations like Saudi Arabia and the United States, are gearing up support for the protesters along the Syrian-Turkish border.

Turkish authorities are being cautious in their response so as not to spark a regional war, but President Abdullah Gul vowed:

"It is not possible to cover over a thing like that... Whatever is necessary will be done."
