Jerry Sandusky's defense presented testimony meant to chip away at the prosecution's case, including a psychologist who testified Sandusky has a personality disorder, a neighbor claiming an accuser expected a windfall after going public with his accusations, and denials from Sandusky's wife, Dottie.

Psychologist Elliot Atkins testified the 68-year-old Sandusky has histrionic personality disorder, causing a deep need for attention which leads to innapropriate and seductive sexual behavior. 

According to Reuters:

Atkins told jurors that histrionic personality disorder is characterized by excessive emotionality and attention seeking, and symptoms include inappropriate sexually seductive or provocative behavior.

The psychologist testified that letters Sandusky wrote to one of his accusers - which prosecutors described as love letters - were consistent with his analysis. Sandusky's memoir, "Touched: The Jerry Sandusky Story," which was published in 2001, "absolutely confirmed my diagnosis," Elliot said.

Earlier in the day, defense lawyers took aim at law enforcement officers' testimony that they had not discussed abuse accounts offered by fellow accusers with other alleged victims in the closely watched case.

The defense attacked the credibility of the accusers, as well. A neighbor testified that the man known as Victim 1 hoped to get a "nice new Jeep" and his mother hoped for a big house after going public with his accusations of abuse against the former Penn State football coach.

The testimony by a neighbor of Victim 1 was meant to bolster the contention of Sandusky's legal team that some of his accusers have altered or exaggerated their stories after being goaded by eager investigators and prosecutors, and by civil lawyers hoping to file lucrative lawsuits.

In some of the most anticipated, though brief, testimony of the trial, Dottie Sandusky, took the stand to assert she never saw alarming behavior between her husband and his accusers, despite victim's claims to the otherwise.

Dottie Sandusky told jurors she never saw any of the sexual acts alleged by prosecutors and never heard any screams for help, as the accuser known as Victim 9 said he made. Dottie Sandusky testified for little under an hour this afternoon, adding a new perspective to an incident that occured on a bowl trip in 1999 and the lingering relationship her husband had with several accusers.

Victim 4 testified last week that Jerry Sandusky had tried to take advantage of him in the hotel room when Mrs. Sandusky walked in.

The trial is expected to go to the jury next week. As testimony winds down, there is still speculation over whether Sandusky will take the stand in his own defense.

“You have to wait,” Joe Amendola, his attorney said.

But Sandusky may have already said too much already. Monday night, NBC broadcast previously unaired portions of his 2011 interview with Bob Costas. Many have criticized NBC for not originally airing apparently incriminating statements.

"I didn’t go around seeking out every young person for sexual needs that I’ve helped," Sandusky said. "There are many that I didn’t have — I hardly had any contact with who I have helped in many, many ways."

 

Sandusky faces 51 counts related to the sexual abuse of ten victims over a ten-year period. He faces up to 500 years in prison if convicted.
