Newly elected Russian President Vladimir Putin met with EU leaders in Saint Petersburg Monday to discuss Russia's stance on the Syrian violence. Putin defended his country's commitment to human rights and, according to Voice of America, the talks have not resolved their differences regarding Syria.

However, the AFP reported that they did agree that UN-Arab League leader Kofi Annan's peace plan was the only way forward.

Putin also denied that Russia has been supplying weapons for forces led by the Syrian government, despite Western leaders confirming the accusation.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's determination to eliminate the upheaval against his regime, which has resulted in thousands of civilian deaths over the 15-month rebellion, is likely not to subside as long as support from Russia continues.

Despite the urging of Western leaders, both Russia and China refused to offer military intervention after the Syrian massacre of 108 people, including 49 children, in the town of Houla last month. Assad denied responsibility, claiming that foreign-backed terrorists caused the violence.
