Proposal To Label Foods With GMO's Approved For The November Ballot

Californians will soon get to decide whether special labels for food bearing GMO ingredients is necessary. This proposal would require most processed foods bearing ingredients whose DNA has been altered with that of other plants, animals and even viruses and bacteria, to disclose this on a special label.

The food industry opposes this measure which they claim will cause undue panic and distrust for something which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has described as having no greater health risks than traditional Foods. Opponents of the measure also added that the costs of adding the labels on the packaging could prompt hikes in the cost of food.

"Consumers have a fundamental right to know what is in their food and make choices, so I think everyone should be working toward this," said Albert Straus, president of the Straus Family Creamery, a popular organic dairy in Petaluma. "Our labeling costs do not go through to the consumer."
