As newly elected Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi began his first day on Monday, he set new priorities for his country: to create a new constitution as well as improve the economy and security, reported BBC News. He also plans to assemble a new cabinet:

  • One of Mr Morsi's campaign spokeswomen, Nermine Mohammed Hassan, told Agence France-Presse: "He has already started with a list of names he is considering. He says he will declare the cabinet soon."
  • Another Morsi spokesman, Yasser Ali, said the president's key concern was political stability.
  • State television showed Mr Morsi meeting on Monday with Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, the head of the ruling military council, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF).

The SCAF has led Egypt since former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak was ousted from power last year. The SCAF has also said that it plans to maintain its legislative powers, a promise that would prove difficult for the new president.
